How to Remove Stretch Marks

Normally Stretch Marks are caused by one of several reasons include pregnancy, rapid weight loss or puberty and can be experienced by both men and women.  Lots of teenagers experiencing puberty and nearly half of all pregnant women will get stretch marks during that time in their life.

The medical term for stretch marks is striae dinstensae and is caused when the skin is excessively stretched. Once this occurs, the collagen and elastin between the layers of the skin breaks down, causing an internal scar that can be seen on the surface in the form of a stretchmark.

Dependant on your own natural skin pigmentation, the stretch marks will be either reddish brown, dark brown or pink streaks. The coloration of the marks will normally gradually fade, and eventually will become fine silvery lines of scar tissue given time. However, many women find that after giving birth several times, the ability for these marks to disappear gradually reduces.

In the case of Pregnant women stretch marks generally start to develop on the stomach as their skin stretches to allow for the babies natural growth during the second or third trimester.

Stretch marks are often genetic too.  The good news is that there are ways to minimise your chances of getting them. If a parent developed stretch marks either during puberty or during pregnancy, you take care of your skin when you see your shape changing.

One of the most common questions asked is how to remove stretch marks?

Well, in the case of existing stretch marks, these are somewhat harder to remove and it is normally better to prevent them before they occur.  However, once they have occurred, removing stretch marks can be achieved by using stretch marks creams or a good stretch mark lotion such as Skin Clinic Vitamin E Oil, Johnson’s Pure Tissue Oil. Barmon stretch mark cream, revitol stretch mark cream or Trilastin-SR by EC Research. These oils and creams generally contain cocoa butter, Vitamin E, lanolin, hydrolysed collagen and elastin or skin healers such as Squalene Oil and DL-Panthenol.  All of these generally work by being absorbed into the skin and then revitalising the collagen and elastin levels within the middle layers of skin causing the marks to smooth out. Although there is no magic cure for stretch marks, this is the main way in how to remove stretch marks. If you have older stretch marks and you find that none of the normal creams and lotions work, then you need to try products which contain alpha hydroxy acids as these may assist in smoothing them out.

Preventing stretch marks follows much the same process but should be easier since scars will not have yet formed. You should apply your stretch marks treatment at least twice a day.  It is best to apply your stretch marks treatment after you have had a shower or bath as this will allow the stretch mark oil or cream for stretch marks to be properly absorbed by the skin whilst it is soft. By doing this you will minimise, if not totally prevent, stretch marks from forming on your body since you will be ensuring your body retains a high level of collagen and elastin.
